Let’s Make Financial Literacy A School Subject

Keyword: Financial Literacy

Debt levels in Canada and in the US are at record levels and while many of us are great at spending money — unfortunately few of us are saving for a rainy day. So we need to find ways to help Canadians and Americans become better savers and spenders. We need to find out what they were doing in other countries to advance financial literacy and meet with financial groups, student councils, credit counselling officials, charitable agencies, government officials and many other stakeholders to hear what they have to say and what suggestions they would make to help Canadians and Americans become more financially literate.

I believe that Canadian and American schools should start teaching children about managing money as early as elementary grades.

Consumers have the tendency of taking advantage of credit card offers without really thinking through the consequences of overspending. 700,000 consumers with poor credit and with not enough financial smarts have signed up for a credit card with a 59.9% interest rate. And that rate is completely legal !!!
