Eisenhower Farewell Address (Full)
President Dwight Eisenhower’s Farewell Address to the nation January 17, 1961
I believe that President Dwight David Eisenhower’s farewell address is the most important speech given by a U.S. president, and it seems that it is still much underappreciated today.
Eisenhower warned the nation against the growing power of the military-industrial complex. For more on this subject: Military-Industrial Complex, Fifty Years On
The pieces of advice Eisenhower gave us still ring true today:
– To put the national interest ahead of politics.
– Beware spending beyond our means.
– To guard against the power of special interests.
– The need to maintain balance, balance between the private and the public economy.
We have ignored Ike’s warnings and the pieces of advice he gave us. He sounds very rational to me. I’m not surprised about how U.S. looks and feel to most Americans.
