Mitt Romney had a series of foot-in-mouth moments…. it’s not over yet!
Along with his his trademark laugh , GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney has riddled the campaign trail with some of the most epically tone-deaf quotes, including “I like being able to fire people,” “I’m also unemployed,” he also said he knew what it was like to worry about getting a “pink slip.”And, of course, ” corporations are people to, my friend.” But at CNN’s GOP presidential debate in Jacksonville, FL on Thursday, Romney racked up the out-of-touch remarks.
Already under fire for his offshore accounts , his tax returns , and his profits from foreclosed homes , Romney sought to defend exactly why he had a Swiss bank account. “I don’t know of any American president who has had a Swiss bank account,” Gingrich said. Woman at a town hall Asks Romney: Is it patriotic to stash your money in the Cayman Islands”
Mitt Romney was forced to defend his offshore accounts on Friday when confronted by a woman at a town hall event in Maine, CBS News reports.
“Do you think it’s patriotic of you to stash away your money in the Cayman Islands?” the woman asked, according to a video of the event, available below.
After the jeers and boos from the crowd subsided, the former Governor of Massachusetts said, “That’s okay, that’s a good question. C’mon, I gotta take some shots now and then or it won’t be interesting.”
Romney proceeded to explain that a he doesn’t manage his money. Instead, a blind trustee has managed his money for the last ten years, because Romney “wanted to make sure I didn’t have a conflict.”
While he didn’t address the question of “patriotism,” he did say his offshore investments didn’t save him any money on his taxes.
“I have not saved one dollar by having an investment somewhere outside this country,” Romney said. “The investment in an offshore account was to invest back here in the United States and the reason it was there they explained was so foreign investors could also invest in that entity. So I pay all the taxes I’m required to pay under the law, and by the way, not a dollar more. Thank you.”
The crowed erupted in applause after Romney answered.
Note that a number of Republicans have defended Romney, saying his comments have been unfairly taken out of context. And, these republicans claim to be Christians.
May I remind you that caring for the poor, for those at the margins of our society is a Biblical call. To “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute…” (Proverbs)
